Second hand shop-take 2!

You may recall my last entry about this great couple out in Rockwood who owns "Second hand shop"! I have a few more treasures to post, including an old Oak Arts and Crafts hall stand in mint condition. First and most importantly I wanted to announce that Vija Francis-Celmins,from Latvia, and incredibly talented artist will be displaying her artwork at the CAMH-workman arts in Toronto. The exhibition is called "Being Scene" and is dedicated to people suffering from depression and other ailments of that nature. Vija was a brilliant physicist and mathematician until her true love for what she does took over, which steered her into the life she now owns. This is a serious matter and we hope that this event will bring lots of attention especially on Vija! This painting was gracefully given to me today as a gift. It has been a long time since I have received such a meaningful gift.. Why? because she wanted me to have a piece of her life.. one that she shed way back, one that used to belong to someone else. It is an intensily personal watercolour with a lot meaning behind it. A lot of emotions went into it. Thankfully, Vija is strong and happy now and only does good for others!.....Thank you, I will cherish it forever!...

Texture and pattern is like what Kelly Wearstler calls it: the salt and pepper of your interior (Modern Glamour). It is so important to successfully acheive this combo. It needs to add dimention, it needs to create vibrancy, and needs to create layers. Much like a painting, texture and pattern are found in the materials and colours you use and combine. I think the only way to acheive this successful melange is by trail and error, see what works, and see what doesnt. Introducing pattern is successful only if you commit 100% all the way. You cant have a room only with some pattern, because then it becomes jarring. The key to pattern is to have it of different sizes, but within the same colour palette. Also the more pattern you have in a room, the less you see it, but it does create a real enticing mood, and just a feast of energy that you wont get tired of anytime soon.

Texture is acheived by mixing flat/glossy, or knotted/smooth, silky/rough. A good balance is key though!.. Metals are also a great way to intrudure and play with texture. Wether it's be golds, or silver, it helps bounce light around and add that reflective surface.

I hope I was able to illustrate it through the pictures i just shared. Enjoy Easter!!

Egg-ilicious....

In the spirit of Easter, I thought I would share a few images of how design was influenced by this asymmetrical and very symbolic shape. Eggs represent"Birth", "ovulation", "sex" and "primitive instincts", "breakfast", "bacon and eggs" etc...In short, everyone know what eggs are! But you are looking for the perfect egg-colour for your walls, there is only one in my books. One of my favourites: Joa's White by Farrow and Ball.
